PROJECT Kolkata Environmental Improvement Project (KEIP) - Capacity Building Programme
ABOUT THE PROJECT The objective of KEIP was to achieve a sustained improvement in the environmental, health, and quality of life of the communities of Kolkata, through better management of environmental waste and drainage, combined with settlement improvement & resettlement of the urban poor . Capacity Building Programme, which has received 28.3 million grant from DFID, focuses on strengthening KMC to ensure delivery of quality services and integration of poor into development process. CBP proposed interventions in four categories: Governance, Organisational Development and Social Inclusion, Resource Mobilization and Improved Financial Management, Urban Planning and Improved Environmental Management and Computerization of KMC.
TIME PERIOD 14 months
SERVICES

•  Assessed the capacity of KMC in terms of the staff, systems, financial management & resource mobilisation;

•  Assessed the current position and role of the CMC in improving the environment of Calcutta

•  Established the future desired future role of the CMC in environmental management

•  Built consensus on the shortcomings and evolve a strategy for proposed capacity building measures in order to achieve the agreed objectives

•  Identified other stakeholders and define their possible future role and contribution

•  Evaluated the proposed initiatives in CBP and refine them based on the participatory process in order to develop ownership and acceptability of the proposals

•  Identified detailed interventions required in order to achieve the accepted CBP proposals

•  Ensured that the proposed interventions shall lead to sustainable development of capacity and the successful convergence with the proposed outcomes of the project (CEIP)
